The Skate Lab is Alberta’s only dedicated retailer serving the province’s figure skating community. Our team is passionate about the sport and we bring years of experience and specialized knowledge to give every Alberta figure skater, from beginner to elite, performance-level athletes, the equipment, accessories, and support services they need to compete on the local, and national, and world ice stage.

Built On History
Monique Wasmann is a lifelong figure skater, a national champion, and a National Level 3 certified coach in good standing Skate Canada. She has been coaching for more than 20 years and has led multiple synchronized skating teams to compete at the national level as well as competitive ice dance teams and singles. Monique was selected to choreograph the skate scene in Theatre Calgary’s “The Christmas Carol” and worked in production for 7 years. In partnership with her sister, she founded The Solstice Synchronized Figure Skating teams out of the esteemed Calalta Figure Skating Club in Calgary. Monique is committed to fostering a love of the sport for new figure skaters and providing the tools and training developing figure skaters need to reach the highest levels of their potential.
Chris Wasmann is a school teacher with a commitment to helping children access the resources they need to realize their goals and optimize all of their talents and aspirations. Chris brings multi-sport expertise as a competitive Ironman participant and distance runner, and a long-time championship coach of volleyball and basketball. This gives him a unique perspective of the needs of athletes at all levels. Chris also has a Bachelor Of Management degree and 10+ years in sport retail which has provided a comprehensive understanding of the needs and client experience that is critical is sports retail. Chris understands determination and hard work that it takes to get across the finish line.
We are proud to partner with esteemed local dressmaker, Annie. Under the banner of Sparks Boutique, Annie designs and crafts unique, stunning, yet affordable competitive attire for figure skaters from around the world. A Mission Born Of Passion
As a passionate advocate of the sport of figure skating and coach of aspiring figure skaters, Monique understood the void in the figure skating community of Alberta. Quality figures skates had to be purchased from suppliers in other cities or provinces. Appropriate training and competition attire was not locally available. Figure skates needed to be shipped to another city for professional, sport-specific sharpening. There was no local, dedicated retailer for high performance equipment and apparel.
The Skate Lab was founded to be a hub for figure skaters at all skill levels across Alberta. It was our mission to build a specialized retail location where every figure skater, beginner to advanced, could access the equipment and resources they need to achieve their goals for figure skating. The Skate Lab brings the industry’s most recognized brands in-store to give the figure skating community local access to the highest quality goods at price points that are affordable for everyone.
