Figure Skates & Attire

Figure Skates & Attire

There is a science to dressing for optimal comfort and performance in the skating rink. It can be challenging to find durable, functional athletic wear that can provide sufficient warmth without impeding movement and execution, especially in Calgary. In the past, figure skaters in Calgary were limited to sourcing figure skating fitness wear online from providers in other cities or making do with limited local sources for general athletic attire not specifically designed for figure skaters. The Skate Lab is Calgary’s only local source for training and competition figure skating attire. Explore our options, try on, and access the highest quality recreational, practice, and competition attire tailored to your unique needs and style at The Skate Lab.

Figure Skating Attire FAQs

Choosing the right figure skating attire for practice is critical. Here are some things to keep in mind when shopping for apparel for training:

  1. Choose Layers For Warmth: Layers make it easy to adjust for temperature during training. Layer a long or short sleeve shirt with a jacket and add accessories like leg warmers and gloves that can be added or peeled off as training activities increase body temperature.
  2. Choose Performance Fabrics: Training apparel with advanced fabric technologies should wick moisture away from the skin, offer breathability, and be resistant to wear and tear. Look for fabrics that have thermal lining or soft brushed inner finishes. These pieces will provide the highest levels of comfort and durability.
  3. Fit And Shape: Comfort is key, but fit and shape can impact performance. Training apparel should not impede movement and a tailored snug fit can help you coach assess lines and form.

Choosing the right figure skating apparel for competition can give you a leg up. Here are some things to consider when shopping for competition attire:

  • Fit And Comfort: Your competition attire should fit like a second skin. Poor fit and uncomfortable fabrics can distract and impact your performance. Choose fabrics that don't restrict or bunch. Focus on fit and freedom of movement.
  • Personality and Flair: Some key considerations when choosing competition apparel are your own personal style, choreography, music, and the story you want to tell.
  • Competition Guidelines: Your competition apparel is personal, but don’t forget that many competitions have apparel guidelines that must be adhered to. These can include restrictions around colour, modesty, and coverage but your attire choice can also impact your scores.

  1. Trim your toenails! Long toenails can make it uncomfortable for your feet to fit into skates so make sure they are trimmed back with no sharp edges.
  2. Bring Socks! If you skate in a pair of socks/tights that are thicker or thinner than the ones you wore to your skate fitting, your skates will fit differently. It’s important to wear the same type of socks your fitting that you plan to wear when you skate. It's ideal that the sock is not bulky as it can fold in the skate and cause a pressure point. We of course will have disposable nylons here just in case you forget or we have a selection of tights and socks that you can purchase.
  3. Time! Make sure you give yourself enough time to get a proper fitting, especially for the more advanced skaters. Heat fitting and blade alignment which you will get with the purchase of your skate can take some time to make sure they feel just right.

Breaking in new skates can sometimes come with some adjustment time. If you are experiencing blisters or pressure points please come in and we can help ease the pain of breaking them in.
